A Mouthpiece for Snoring May Bring Harmony to the Bedroom                                                   Â
“Snoring may be eliminated with a mouthpiece for snoring, also called an oral appliance or snoring aid.”Â
Dr. David W. Sparks
There is a device that has been developed primarily by dentists that is elegant in its simplicity, yet extraordinary in usefulness as it relates to winning the battle of the bedroom: a mouthpiece for snoring. This oral appliance is fitted to the teeth and worn to bed so as to prevent snoring. Without the disruptive effects of snoring, better sleep is achieved for the snorer and the bed-mate. Let’s talk about the importance of sleep.
Sleep Apnea and Other Sleep Disorders
We cannot control our health and our lives without quality sleep and one of the biggest sleep enemies is sleep apnea . When we get a good night’s rest, life is much improved and we feel better about everything including ourselves. We have energy, we are at peace, we are not fatigued.
There are some 80 types of sleep disorders that prevent good sleep. Snoring may be the most prevalent of these despite the fact that people who snore will often tell you they sleep well. They deny they have a problem but will admit it’s a problem for their spouse. This thinking is totally incorrect. Snoring acts to arouse everyone in the bedroom from deep sleep and this includes the snorer him/herself. We’ll find out a little later why a mouthpiece for snoring may provide relief.
Whether the deterrent to good sleep is snoring, insomnia, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome or anything else is irrelevant. Poor sleep has a profoundly negative impact on your quality of life.
Let’s discuss this. The most common complaint from people who snore is that they suffer from daytime fatigue. When they are sedentary, these people who are sleep deprived have trouble staying awake, i.e., sitting at their desk, reading in an easy chair, driving. Falling asleep at the wheel is hugely dangerous. Here’s how pervasive this problem is: almost 40% of American adults complain that their daytime fatigue interferes with their daily activities. They are literally ill. These statistics place a mouthpiece for snoring in a prominent position.
They’re in a bad mood too! They’re irritable and grumpy because of poor sleep…not because life’s ups and downs have taken a toll on them. As we age, we don’t sleep as well as when we are young and one of the primary reasons is that more and more of us snore as we get older. An oral appliance, otherwise known as a mouthpiece for snoring may offer a solution.
Snoring Causes – the Source of Snoring
Snoring causes are primarily from the passage at the back of the throat through which air from our nose or mouth travels to the lungs which seems to collapse when we fall asleep. This is because soft tissues like the soft palate and uvula surrounding this airway relax when we fall asleep. This loss of muscle tension means that you have a mass of tissue falling into the airway (think of drinking a frosty through a straw and you suck ice or slush up into the straw…it makes it difficult for liquid to get through). So when the soft tissue collapses, the size of the airway is reduced, a cause of snoring.
Snoring Remedies
In order to breathe, air must be under more pressure since the opening is smaller (like a pressure wash on your hose). So the breath stream which is now under pressure passes over the relaxed tissues of the throat and sets these floppy tissues into vibration. Snoring remedies must address this issue. The sleeping person may be unaware of it but the noise produced by snoring arouses everyone in the bedroom from deep sleep, into lighter sleep and this is not good. The good news is that a mouthpiece for snoring remedies can re-align the jaw in such a way as to physically and mechanically open up the airway. With an open airway, pressure in the breath stream drops and snoring goes away. The mouthpiece for snoring can eliminate snoring because it opens up the airway.
Snoring Treatment
A lot of this you may already know, there is no intention to send you back to the classroom for snoring treatment, but the point needs to be made about how important sleep is. Sleep is to refresh, repair, re-charge, re-vitalize, re-new. We sleep so that we can give our minds and bodies a chance to heal and get ready for the next day. And don’t let anybody tell you that you can get by successfully without a full night’s sleep. Just about everyone, with very few exceptions, needs to get around seven to eight–even nine hours every night to function at their best.
The problem is, while many people know intuitively why they can’t sleep well, they lack the motivation to do anything about it. Some people have real medical problems such as heavy snoring or obstructive sleep apnea that keep them from restful sleep. Oftentimes, they seek the attention of a doctor. This can lead to expensive sleep apnea studies in a sleep lab and cumbersome expensive therapies like CPAP. Sleep apnea experts agree that medical attention is the gold standard for people suffering from what is called “sleep disordered breathing”. However, the number of patients who follow the medical path and spend all that money for the so-called “cure”, end up not following doctor’s orders because the cure ends up being worse than the disease in their minds.
There is snoring treatment relief from some of these problems which is effective and inexpensive with the caveat that this relief may not be as efficacious as the route taken through the physician’s path. This snoring treatment comes in the form of an oral appliance that advances the lower jaw or mandible and it is becoming one of the biggest responsibilities that modern dentists are taking on….mandibular repositioning devices (MRD’s).
