Efforts have been ongoing to clear Scotland's motorway network The transport minister will make an emergency statement to parliament later on the snow chaos which brought gridlock to major roads on Monday.
Opposition MSPs have criticised Stewart Stevenson's response to the severe weather. Efforts are still continuing to reopen a section of the M8.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of pupils are having yet another day off school.
All schools in Glasgow, Inverclyde, Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire will be shut.
However, the situation has eased further east with schools in places including Dundee, Edinburgh and Morayshire opening for the second day in a row.
The weather is still causing disruption for pupils in Falkirk, where all primary schools and nurseries remain closed.
On the roads, work is continuing to clear ice on the M8 out of Edinburgh and to recover abandoned cars across the motorway network.
The M8 was closed westbound overnight between junction one at Hermiston Gait and junction five at Shotts.School closures continue across Scotland on Wednesday.Weather continuing to affect services at airports.On the railways, train services are subject to delay and cancellations.There is widespread bus disruption - services are running but remain unreliable.Major snowfalls saw hundreds of people sleep in their cars or abandon them on the highway as motorways and roads clogged up, particularly on the M8, M80, M9 and A80.
Mr Stevenson had to apologise for the gridlock after some travellers were stuck in their vehicles for more than 15 hours.
He will address MSPs at Holyrood on Wednesday as he faces calls for an inquiry into the Scottish government's response to the weather.
First Minister Alex Salmond blamed the chaos on the "perfect storm" of winter weather conditions, including higher than expected snowfall and continued freezing temperatures.
There will be live coverage of the statement by the transport minister on Politics Scotland on BBC 2 Scotland at 1400 GMT.
The bad weather has also impacted on postal deliveries and the Royal Mail apologised to customers in Scotland for delays.
It said there was also some disruption to mail going to and from England as the weather has affected air and road networks into Scotland.
In Glasgow, the freeze has also seen the cancellation of this weekend's Santa Dash.
About 4,000 runners were due to take part in the annual fundraising 5K race on Sunday, but safety concerns forced the decision to cancel.
