Little-known candidate Herman Cain wins tea party support (The Ticket)

Georgia businessman Herman Cain remains largely unknown to most Americans, but he captured a majority of support at this weekend’s Tea Party Patriots summit.

Attendees at the Phoenix, Ariz. meeting chose the conservative radio host  as their top pick for 2012. With 22 percent support in the poll, Cain beat out marquee names such as Sarah Palin, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, all of whom regularly top national polls on the 2012 contest.

Though the significance of straw polls in general is limited, they offer a glimpse into who can excite a crowd and the GOP’s activist base.

The summit also ran an online-only version of the poll. That survey was won by Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who is known for his ardent online following. Cain placed second.
