Two years ago, in summer, I took my family on a 10-night cruise of the
Mediterranean, aboard the Celebrity _Solstice_, which had only recently been
launched and put into service. It had been hailed by most cruiseship
commentators as the first in a new category of ships, unusually spacious and
comfortable, and designed throughout for persons seeking the traditional
pleasures of the seas (relaxation, conversations, and contact with foreign
destinations).
To my surprise, the Celebrity _Solstice _was later taken out of Mediterranean
service and made to ply standard itineraries of the Caribbean, going to those
so-called private beaches and shopping-mall-centered ports. I was disappointed
that so little of the _Solstice_'s capabilities was being used.
That's why it's refreshing to announce that the _Solstice _is being returned
to the best kind of foreign-port-heavy sailing in the Mediterranean and that,
on its departure from Rome on November 18 of this year, it will not only do a
fascinating 10-night itinerary but at a specially-reduced price of only $949
per person for an outside, verandah-equipped cabin. That is surely a cruise
bargain that we will not soon see again.
