Will The Real Jobs Number Please Stand Up

Over the course of a month, a number of different reports related to employment are release.  Each gives us a slightly different view of employment.  Some have been positive and some remain negative.  What is reality?  So we ask, will the real jobs number please stand up?

For the past year, the number contained in the Challenger projected layoff report has been at non-recessionary levels.  The ADP payroll report has reflected jobs growth for the past six months.  The hiring component of the various Purchasing Managers Institute (PMI) reports has been strong.  In spite of these, we have seen little progress in the headline numbers issued in the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment Situation Report.  Then, of course, there are the unreported discouraged workers.
