Christie Vilsack to explore run for Congress in Iowa (The Ticket)

Christie Vilsack, wife of Agriculture Secretary and former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack, announced Wednesday that she’s moving back to Iowa to explore a bid for Congress.

“The decision to run for Congress deserves serious consideration,” the Democratic former first lady of Iowa said in a statement. “Next month I will move to Ames and continue to explore the possibility of representing Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives.” Through media appearances and her new exploratory campaign website, Vilsack announced a listening tour in Iowa’s Fourth District.

It was no secret that Vilsack had her eye on the seat, which is currently held by five-term Republican Rep. Steve King–a staunch conservative who remains a favorite of the tea party movement. But today’s announcement marks Vilsack’s first solid step toward an official campaign.

On Monday, Tom Vilsack described his wife’s potential candidacy as “a holy war,” language which quickly made headlines.
