McDonald’s Supersizes the Economy with 50,000 McJobs (ContributorNetwork)

Along with cheap food, McDonald’s is known for cheap jobs. Whenever jobs are scarce, people say, “there’s always McDonald’s.” Along with “whopper flopper” the perception is that a job at McDonald’s is bottom of the barrel.

McDonald’s is opening 50,000 of the said “McJobs.” Many of these will be low-paying clerks, cooks and custodial staff, but some jobs are opening in management. McJob applications came hot off the grill at 7 a.m. and will finish up at 5 p.m.

Many of these jobs are located in the Chicago area, but there are jobs throughout the 13,000-franchise chain nationwide. WGN says McDonald’s is trying to change the McJob persona. I agree with Chicago Breaking Business: good luck with that.

Although spell check doesn’t recognize McJob, Merriam-Webster does. McJob (which has been in common parlance since 1986) means “a low-paying job requiring little skill and offering little opportunity for advancement.” Jobs Online even lists McJob applications.

Juxtapose that definition with McDonald’s promise that the 50,000 McJobs available will pay more than the $7.25 federal minimum wage. What, $7.30 per hour?

Is there any shame attached to working at McDonald’s? In high school, no. At least there shouldn’t be.
