Despite the recession and the mass layoffs it brought, the median time employees stayed at their jobs reached an all-time high last year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, when workers were asked in January how long they had been with their current employer, their median response was 4.4 years.
“The data may seem a bit surprising but it really isn’t,” says Joseph Du Pont, dean of the Hiatt Career Center at Brandeis University. “During periods of economic instability there are simply less jobs available. Also, people tend to be grateful for the jobs they have, which makes them less inclined to look.”
