Meanwhile, he is at the top of the GOP’s latest presidential polls.

Trump understands the “birther” movement as a way for the most vehemently anti-Obama Republicans to separate themselves from those who oppose President Barack Obama on policy grounds. The Mitt Romney’s and others decided early on to make it about issues — not personality.

Trump is on a different path.

Bottom line: Trump is no apprentice.

Think Howard Dean at this point in 2003. He decided to prove himself the most anti-George W. Bush guy in the field.
