NEW YORK (AFP) – Ex-IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn returns to a Manhattan court Friday for an unexpected appearance over the charges he attempted to rape a New York hotel maid, officials said.
The New York Times, citing sources close to the case, said the appearance was to alter the strict bail conditions imposed on him.
Strauss-Kahn had posted $1 million bail and a $5 million bond when he was released in May, and agreed to remain under house arrest with an ankle monitor.
Once a serious contender as the next president of France, Strauss-Kahn had spent days in New York’s tough Rikers Island jail awaiting the bail package agreement.
Officials declined to reveal the reason for the hearing.
“No details about this appearance will be available until the defendant appears in court tomorrow,” said the statement from the Manhattan District Attorney’s office Thursday.
