MTV’s first broadcast was Aug. 1, 1981. With the words “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll,” a television network that inspired an entire generation was started. Thousands of music videos, wild hair, outrageous stunts and 30 years later, MTV is still relevant in a world of Internet downloads, instant messaging and iPods.

9/14/1984: The first date of the Video Music Awards . The statue given to the winners was also the logo used in the “moon broadcast” photograph of an astronaut holding the American flag on the surface of the moon. The best video winner in 1984 was “You Might Think” by the cars. Madonna gave a live performance of “Like a Virgin” on stage for fans. The first hosts were Bette Midler and Dan Akroyd.
