Miscues, bullpen hurts Mets in 5-4 loss to Cubs (AP)

NEW YORK – Mets manager Terry Collins chose his young closer’s psyche over playing the percentages when Aramis Ramirez came to the plate with first base open and runners on second and third in the ninth inning.

He paid for it.

Ramirez hit a two-run single with two outs off Bobby Parnell, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 5-4 victory over New York after they blew a three-run lead in the eighth Saturday.

“The one thing that enters my mind is I didn’t want to put Bobby in that: He can’t miss, I’ve got to throw that ball over the plate,” Collins. “At this level you’ve got to trust your guys, so that’s my fault.”

Jason Bay had given the Mets a 4-3 lead in the eighth with a two-out, two-run single. But some more sloppy play by New York in the ninth on an overall rough day in the field and another meltdown by Parnell (3-6) helped the Cubs even a three-game series that will culminate with a ceremony Sunday to mark the 10-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11. The Mets are offering free tickets to New York City first responders and their families for that game.
