Serial killer Clifford Olson dead (Reuters)

(Reuters) – Canadian serial killer Clifford Olson, serving a life sentence for murdering 11 boys and girls in the early 1980s, has died in a Quebec hospital, local media reports said on Friday.

Earlier reports said Corrections Canada had told the families of Olson’s victims that he was dying of cancer.

Olson murdered three girls and eight boys aged 9 to 18 in British Columbia over an eight month period beginning in November 1980.

Police said Olson’s victims had been tortured and sexually assaulted.

Olson confessed to the murders and, in a controversial deal, gave police information on the location of the victims’ bodies in return for a C$100,000 ($95,000) payment to his family.
