Silver, whose last day is Friday, is leaving to become a distinguished visiting fellow at Third Way, DOE confirmed Thursday while saying his departure had been planned for months.
Silver has held his post since November 2009, which means he wasn’t around when DOE finalized its $535 million loan guarantee to Solyndra about two months earlier.
Still, Silver found himself with the biggest political target on his back so far, as congressional Republicans stalked for answers from the Obama administration about the failed solar manufacturer.
House Republicans had called last month for Silver to be fired after he skirted several rapid-fire questions at an Energy and Commerce oversight subcommittee hearing. They included queries about who at DOE was responsible for approving the restructuring of Solyndra’s loan guarantee earlier this year so that taxpayers would no longer be first to be repaid if the company defaulted.
