It has been 14 years in the making, but UK scientists are now happy to announce a new breed of broccoli for us all to consume and become healthier. At least that’s the thinking behind this new “super broccoli.”
We all know that broccoli is good for us due to it containing glucoraphanin–an organic compound that helps reduce cholesterol by breaking down fat in the body (broccoli is also high in vitamin C, fiber, has anti-cancer properties, and can help boost DNA cell repairs). So if you can get more glucoraphanin into the body, you should be able to break down more fat therefore cutting the risk of heart disease.
In order to do this scientists decided to breed a typical British broccoli with a Sicilian variety. You probably wouldn’t want to just eat the Sicilian variety, which has a very high glucoraphanin content, but is quite bitter.
