Kinect has been a runaway success for Microsoft, and it’s a big reason the Xbox 360 has been the top-selling console on the market ever since the sensor first landed on retail shelves. But now Microsoft is ready to move beyond the 360: Kinect is coming to PCs, and possibly television sets as well.
In an official blog post, Microsoft announced that 2012 will see the arrival of a desktop-friendly Kinect for use with Windows computers. It’ll be re-tuned to accommodate the shorter focal distance (with no loss of accuracy at as little as 19 inches), but this won’t just be a glorified webcam. Kinect for PC will enable the same NUI experiences it does on the Xbox, from voice commands to gesture-driven interaction (think of the Netflix app on the the 360).
