Few subjects get geeks’ blood pumping like that of internet freedom. The internet has radically changed our world, and one of the key tenets of that change has been the internet’s fundamental essence of liberty. With some obvious exceptions (death threats, child porn, leaked government secrets), nearly anything goes on the ‘net — and many of us see that as a good thing. We can each craft our own virtual experience on the internet, with little concern for disruption from policing authority figures.
On the other side of the fence, however, copyright holders are up in arms. They long for the days when their music, movies, and games could only be distributed via physical media. Despite the fact that they’re still profiting wildly, they would love to take us back to a world that more closely resembles the 20th century. The method they’ve come up with to curb piracy is the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA.
