MARSHALL – Jobs.
Among the many issues facing the Legislature this year, none might be more talked about than job creation in Minnesota.
Democrats and Republicans agree that creating jobs will be a huge priority during the 2012 session.
“We’ve spent a lot of time talking about what we can do to spur job growth,” Deputy Minority Leader Debra Hilstrom said Monday in an interview with the Independent. “When you have big swings – right now we have a little bit of a surplus, but ultimately we have a $4 billion structural deficit in the future – one of the ways you can combat future deficits is you can put people back to work. We’re hoping that jobs is going to be the No. 1 issue of the session. That should be our priority – getting people back to work and growing the economy.”
Gov. Mark Dayton’s jobs growth package, which he unveiled last week, includes a New Jobs Tax Credit focused on immediate job creation which would provide businesses with a $3,000 tax credit for each unemployed Minnesotan, veteran or recent graduate hired in 2012 and a $1,500 credit for each new hire through June 2013.
