The husband of jailed Ukrainian former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has sought political asylum in the Czech Republic, Czech sources say.
A Czech newspaper said Oleksander Tymoshenko had requested asylum at the end of last year but there was no formal confirmation by the government.
Mr Tymoshenko’s wife was jailed for seven years in October for abuse of office at a controversial trial.
Her husband, who has Czech business interests, stood by her in court.
A Czech government source told Reuters news agency no decision had been reached on Mr Tymoshenko’s application.
Czech interior ministry spokesman Pavel Novak told AFP news agency the ministry did not comment on asylum requests.
Asylum controversy
Mr Tymoshenko, who has a stake in the Czech company International Industrial Projects, has a fair chance of being granted asylum, according to Czech newspaper Pravo.
