There aren’t many people in the world that can claim to have been published in a scientific paper, let alone those that have done so before their 11th birthday. 5th grader Clara Lazen can however, as she has been officially listed as the co-author of a published study on tetranitratoxycarbon, a molecule that she discovered during her chemistry class one day in a Kansas City public school.
During a class assignment where the students were studying a nitroglycerin molecule, Lazen decided to play around with some different configurations using the stick and ball modeling tools she had been given to use. The result of her experimentation was a model that not only looked feasible, but also brand-new. When she brought the model up to her teacher, Kenneth Boehr, he was deeply intrigued.
