Baker McKenzie Boosts Spain Practice By Adding Former Garrigues MP

Baker McKenzie has bolstered its Spanish practice with the hire of senior arbitrator José MarÃa Alonso Puig from leading local firm Garrigues, The Am Law Daily has learned.
Alonso spent nine years as managing partner of the 2,000-lawyer Spanish giant—the only Iberian firm to qualify for inclusion on The American Lawyer’s most recent Global 100 ranking—before standing down in 2009 to head Garrigues’s arbitration practice. He is due to join Baker’s Madrid office on March 1.
Grant Hanessian, cochair of Baker’s international arbitration practice, says Alonso’s addition is a “great coup” for the firm. Fellow cochair Guenter Pickrahn says Alonso is “one of the world’s leading arbitration figures.”
Alonso focuses his practice on civil and commercial law disputes, covering a range of areas from financial and insurance litigation to insolvencies. He also has niche expertise in sports law, advising on disputes related to image rights, sponsorship agreements, employment contracts, and player transfers.
