FLORESVILLE, Texas (RNS) — Vice President Mike Pence traveled to this rural stretch of Texas to offer prayers and words of comfort to a stricken community three days after a lone gunman killed 25 people during a Sunday morning church service.

The community-wide prayer service held Wednesday (Nov. 8) on the football field of Floresville High School, about 13 miles south of Sutherland Springs, the site of the massacre, was unambiguously Christian.

The service, replete with Bible readings and prayers to Jesus, offered few political points and no mention of guns, mental illness or domestic violence.
