Refinancing After Improving One’s Garage

At face value, improving your garage in any way, shape or form might not seem like a significant remodel. However, any improvement made to your house can qualify you for refinancing, and the garage is not exempt. In fact, the garage is one of the more significant features of your house. Here are the main reasons why you should consider refinancing your house after improving your garage—and how you can go about doing so. Significance Usually, when you remodel any part of your home, you not only enhance it aesthetically, but also in a functional sense. So, consequently the home increases in value. And the garage is no exception; indeed, the garage takes up a sizable section of your home’s exterior. By improving your garage, you can secure a better deal on your mortgage. When you hire the services of a garage door repair company, make sure you save all receipts and related information to use during the refinancing process. Lower Interest Rates A major incentive to refinance is to get a much lower interest rate than the one you are currently paying. Since your interest rate is directly tied to the amount you pay on your mortgage on a monthly basis, you pay less when your interest is lower. Just a few percentages lower can make a major difference in your payments. For instance, if you have a...

Why it Makes Financial Sense to Take Care of Your Back

People with back problems have medical costs at an average of 76% higher than people without back problems. Between 1997 and 2005, medication for back pain rose from an average of $25 to $58. Often those who have surgeries continue to suffer from pain, and some even wish they had tried other avenues more aggressively first. Other treatments like physical therapy and more exercise may help with back problems, but ultimately back pain is expensive. Regardless of the cost of treatment, the cost in unearned income is also staggering. Many people don’t work, or don’t do certain types of work because of back pain. The lost income is a costly problem for sufferers. The financial cost to businesses in 2003 because of chronic pain totaled $61.2 billion. It is estimated that the total cost of chronic pain in the United States totals $635 billion. That sum is staggering. Even divided between the estimated 100 million sufferers, the figure is much more expensive than any one sufferer can afford. About 20 percent of those suffering from lower back pain later become disabled, resulting in about 80 percent of the expenses incurred by patients with back pain. This staggering statistic is enough to realize it’s important to take care of one’s back. The True Cost Cannot Be Calculated The financial price tag is just getting started. According to Laser Health Spa...

Construction Methods for Soil Cement Bentonite Slurry Walls

Soil Cement Bentonite, otherwise called S-C-B Slurry is a mix of the original soil backfill from a trench or hole with cement and bentonite slurry.  Most people are familiar with cement and soil, but bentonite slurry is a key part of the wall’s integrity. Bentonite slurry is made from bentonite clay, which can be found in Wyoming. The clay particles become very viscous when fully hydrated, which is key to creating an effective environmental sub-surface barrier.  The clay slurry takes between 30 minutes and 24 hours to become fully hydrated. Steps For Wall Construction First, a trench or hole must be created.  This must be deep enough to reach bedrock, or the water table depending on the purpose of the slurry wall and the nature of contaminates.  Then the floor of the trench needs to be cleaned up well enough that the slurry can have an effective seal.  Next the trench or hole will be filled or coated with bentonite and water slurry, which is only 2 to 4 percent bentonite by weight.  Then the trench or hole is refilled with a mix of bentonite slurry, cement, and soil: usually the soil that was removed from the area to create the trench or hole. These ingredients are mixed in batches and then poured or pushed down into the area that will become the wall.  Great care must be taken...

Handling Divorce with Kids

Divorce is often one of the most painful experiences a couple can go through, but that difficulty can be even more pronounced when children are involved. The psychological stress that adults go through is often just as high or even much higher for children, who often have difficulty expressing and dealing with their pain, as well as difficulty adjusting to a new domestic situation. Not dealing with that pain can lead to deeper issues later, and often parents with the taxing effects of divorce proceedings are in a poor position to help. To add to the stress, two major legal issues are part of divorce settlements that involve children: child support and custody issues. Child Custody Issues: Avoiding Pitfalls One of the thorniest issues that can come up in a divorce proceeding is that of child custody. In a small minority of cases, particularly when a split is more amicable, this can usually be settled with minimal legal assistance, and the court sometimes applies a level of latitude to parents who can work together. Pennsylvania law has certain unique facets to it that ensure that parents work together, including on issues like parental relocation. More often than not, however, this can be the thorniest issue in a marriage with children. Often one parent will work harder to ensure the other has limited access to the children; barring good reason,...
