MILAN (Reuters) – Italy’s opera house La Scala will scale back on productions in the 2013-2014 season because of the economic crisis and lower state support, its general manager said on Thursday.

Stephane Lissner told reporters the Milan theatre will reduce the number of operas to 10 instead of the usual 13 due to a decline in revenues.

They will include three by Giuseppe Verdi to celebrate the 200th birthday of the composer, born in 1813. Verdi’s “La Traviata” will open the season on December 7, conducted by Daniele Gatti.

Lissner said he had resisted suggestions of raising ticket prices, cutting back on the number of rehearsals or closing down the theatre’s school.

He said only 36 percent of La Scala’s budget in 2012, worth around 115 million euros ($148 million), was funded by the state, with the rest coming from ticket and subscription revenues as well as private sponsorships.

State financing to the opera house was cut by 7 million euros in 2012, and no additional support is expected this year, La Scala said in January.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – All Michael Bluth wanted to do was to keep his family together, and with the best intentions in mind he found himself awkwardly trying to kiss a vertigo-stricken character played by Liza Minnelli.

With that moment of dizzy romance, the fourth season of cult television comedy “Arrested Development” begins its comeback on Internet video streaming service Netflix on Sunday, some seven years after getting the axe on broadcast television.

“Arrested Development” tells the story of the riches-to-rags dysfunctional Bluth family, led by well-intentioned son Michael, played by Jason Bateman, who cannot sort out their lives after Bluth patriarch George Sr. is jailed for fraud.

Netflix, which has been adding original shows to its online television and film library, will make the entire 15-episode season available at 12:01 a.m. PST on Sunday, harnessing the trend of viewers ‘binge-watching’ TV series online and through DVDs.

The new season of the Emmy-winning series was written with binge-watchers in mind, Bateman, 44, told Reuters.

“This notion that you can release an entire season of a television show on one day and people can take their time to watch it or they can binge, informed the actual writing of this whole story,” he said.

The actor said that the new season would be similar to “one big episode,” just told in 15 half-hour episodes with storylines that are “completely intertwined and braided.”

“There are certain scenes that repeat in multiple episodes but are told from a different angle. That’s just something you couldn’t do on broadcast television,” Bateman said.

The show picks up seven years after the third season finished in 2006, and centers on Michael, handcuffed by his own pride and trying to piece his life back together as his son George Michael (Michael Cera) heads off to college.

“The seven years have been really tough on Michael as they have been on the rest of the family,” Bateman said. “He’s just trying to keep his head above water and not become an embarrassment like the rest of his family.”

THE CULT OF ‘ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT’

Although the critically praised series was canceled by the Fox network in 2006 due to poor ratings, “Arrested Development” was exalted to cult status by the legions of fans that discovered the show on DVD and Netflix.

Ahead of the new season, thousands of fans have lined up in New York and Los Angeles this month in a promotion for free chocolate-covered frozen bananas from the replica Bluth banana stand, famous in the show for containing emergency cash hidden in its walls by George Sr. (Jeffrey Tambor).

George Sr.’s catch phrase, “There’s always money in the banana stand,” even made it onto the floor of Canada’s House of Commons during debate this month over billions of dollars in unbudgeted money.

The new series will see returning cast members including Will Arnett, Portia de Rossi, Tony Hale and David Cross, and will feature several guest appearances including by Minnelli reviving her role as Lucille II, Ben Stiller as magician Tony Wonder and new additions Kristen Wiig and Seth Rogen.

The intention, once the show was canceled by Fox, was for creator Mitchell Hurwitz to develop “Arrested Development” into a film, but the years dragged on and the movie version never came to fruition. Bateman said there was never a doubt among the cast that the scheming Bluths would make a comeback.

“It was just a matter of timing,” he said. “We (the cast) had been talking about it every couple of months for seven years, so it always seemed like it was right around the corner.”

While “Arrested Development” is a redemption story of a loved show that fell victim to Hollywood’s economic hammer, it has also in part become a launching pad for its actors, especially Bateman, Arnett and Cera.

“Mitch just sort of handed all of us a career,” said Bateman, whose star had languished after several poor-performing TV sitcoms in the 1990s. Following “Arrested Development” he has landed prominent roles in films such as “Juno” in 2007, “Up in the Air” in 2009 and “Horrible Bosses” in 2011.

“I was given a second chance,” he said. “I really wasn’t doing anything before this show and it kind of hit the reset button for me and got rid of a lot of baggage I had associated with my name … My name was no longer in my way but a little more of an asset.”

CANNES (Reuters) – The Cannes film festival was hit by a second suspected jewelry heist on Thursday after a diamond necklace worth 2 million euros ($2.6 million) disappeared during a star-studded party, according to upmarket jeweler De Grisogono.

Fawaz Gruosi, the founder of the Swiss firm, said the necklace was part of the company’s 20th anniversary collection paraded by 20 models at the glitzy event at the Hotel Du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes outside Cannes on Tuesday night. Sharon Stone and Paris Hilton were among the guests.

Gruosi said 80 bodyguards, local police, hotel security, and De Grisogono staff had been on duty but when a check was made at the end of the night the diamond necklace was missing.

“We don’t know exactly what happened … it was one of the most beautiful items we had,” Gruosi told Reuters Television.

“The police are trying to figure out what happened.”

A Cannes police source said authorities were investigating whether it was a theft, a problem of inventory or a loss, the source said.

Another Swiss jeweler, Chopard, had gems worth $1.4 million stolen in the first week of the 12-day festival on the glamorous French Riviera, which attracts thousands of actors, filmmakers and journalists.

Police said the Chopard jewelry had been in the safe of a room at the Suite Novotel hotel in central Cannes, which had been rented by an employee of the jeweler.

The entire safe was removed from the wall and taken during the night of May 16. Someone entered without forcing the door or using the magnetic key card, a police source said.

A spokesman for Chopard, a sponsor of the Cannes festival, later played down the report, saying the value had been exaggerated.

Jewelers and fashion houses use the world’s largest film festival at Cannes as a promotional showcase, lending gowns and accessories to celebrities who are photographed on the famed red carpet and at parties along the palm-lined Croisette waterfront.

CANNES (Reuters) – A trip to space with Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio raised 1.2 million euros ($1.5 million) for charity at a glitzy fundraiser at the Cannes film festival on Thursday.

At the 20th annual event organized by amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, DiCaprio emerged as the mystery guest to accompany the winner on a Virgin Galactic flight into space. DiCaprio stars in the film “The Great Gatsby,” which opened the 66th Cannes film festival.

Actress Sharon Stone said the winning bidder would spend three days in training with DiCaprio in New Mexico before blast-off.

“You don’t get to go to outer space every day with a handsome movie star,” said Stone, dressed in a tight-fitting white dress with a gold snake trim down the back.

The bidding started at 1 million euros ($1.29 million).

The auction brochure for the star-studded gala held at the five-star Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, France, near Cannes, said DiCaprio and the winning bidder would be among the first 1,000 people to leave the planet.

The winner, Vasily Klyukin, 37, a Russian living in Monaco, said he had always wanted to go into space.

“I want to be a bit daring,” Klyukin, who works in real estate, told Reuters. “I will have to give up smoking now for sure!”

After the successful bid from Klyukin – who also bought a gold and diamond necklace for 400,000 euros ($517,000) – Stone announced two other tickets were available on the flight. They raised another 1.8 million euros ($2.3 million).

The auction raised 25 million euros ($32.3 million), more than double last year’s sum of 11 million euros($14.2 million).

The amfAR gala is the biggest fundraising event at the world’s largest film festival. The benefit was first hosted by Elizabeth Taylor.

The list of stars attending Thursday’s event included DiCaprio, Cannes jury members Nicole Kidman and Christopher Waltz, singers Kylie Minogue and Janet Jackson, and actors Adrien Brody, Jessica Chastain and Goldie Hawn.

The evening featured performances by gold-clad Shirley Bassey singing “Goldfinger” and British pop band Duran Duran.

Introducing the event, supermodel Heidi Klum said it raised more than 10 million euros ($12.9 million) a year for AIDS research.

Other auction items included tickets to Hollywood events, a Damien Hirst painting, an Annie Leibovitz family portrait, the chance to star in four movies and a private performance from Simon Le Bon and John Taylor of Duran Duran.

CANNES (Reuters) – An avenging Venus settling the psychological and sexual score is the star of acclaimed director Roman Polanski’s “La Venus a la Fourrure” (“Venus in Fur”), one of the Cannes film festival’s two final movies in main competition to premiere on Saturday.

The French-Polish director is one of 20 vying for the top Palme d’Or prize to be handed out at the festival on Sunday by a jury led by Steven Spielberg. Polanski won the prize in 2002 for “The Pianist”, his semi-autobiographical drama about the Warsaw Ghetto, for which he also won an Oscar for best director.

“I think when you show a film here, you have to be in the competition, you have to be a sport,” Polanski told journalists before the official screening. “And even if I don’t get anything I can say, ‘Well, I got it already.’”

Also screening on Saturday is “Only Lovers Left Alive,” U.S. director Jim Jarmusch’s languorous retro-cool vampire film.

Frontrunners for top prize at the end of the 12-day festival include French director Abdellatif Kechiche’s love story “Blue is the Warmest Colour” – whose no-holds-barred lesbian sex had audiences buzzing – and “Inside Llewyn Davis”, U.S. directors Ethan and Joel Coen’s story of a struggling singer trying to make it as a folk singer in the 1960s.

Also on the short list is “The Great Beauty” from Italy’s Paolo Sorrentino, a heady, magical ode to the decadence of Rome, and “The Past” a tension-filled psychological drama from Iranian director Asghar Farhadi.

The jury of Ang Lee, Vidya Balan, Daniel Auteuil, Lynn Ramsay, Christoph Waltz, Naomi Kawase, Nicole Kidman and Cristian Mungiu will hand out the top prize and a slate of other directing and acting awards on Sunday.

U.S. director Steven Soderbergh’s “Behind the Candelabra” starring Michael Douglas as pianist Liberace was an opulent, rhinestone-encrusted spectacle while the most unabashedly political film this year was director Jia Zhangke’s critical look at modern China, “A Touch of Sin”.

Polanski, whose 1974 film “Chinatown” established him as one of the world’s great directors, remains controversial after his 1977 flight from the United States after serving time for unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl.

ROLE REVERSAL

“Venus in Fur” stars Polanski’s wife, Emmanuelle Seigner, as brash actress Vanda who crashes an audition to convince writer Thomas, played by Mathieu Amalric, to cast her as the lead in his new play.

Soon, the roles in the play are being acted out by Vanda and Thomas, and as the themes of domination and submission come into focus, roles become reversed and reality is blurred.

The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw called Polanski’s first French-language film a “playful if occasionally heavy-handed jeu d’ésprit on the subject of sexual role-play, the games we all play, illusion and reality, and directing as a sexual act.”

Peppered with erudite literary references and infused with retro cool – blood is drunk from cordial glasses or frozen into popsicles – “Only Lovers Left Alive” is high on style but short on emotional depth as lovers Adam and Eve seek out type O negative blood and disparage humans as “zombies.”

Starring Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton, Variety’s Leslie Felperin called it a “sweet but slight love story” that feels like “an in-joke intended only for select acolytes, who will probably love it with an undying passion.”

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange may claim to be a champion of transparency, but when an Oscar-winning filmmaker wanted to shine a light on his rise to fame after publishing secret U.S. diplomatic cables on his website, Assange was none too pleased.

Alex Gibney set out to uncover the story behind Assange, 41, and the website he founded in 2006 to leak classified information submitted by anonymous sources, but received little cooperation from the former computer hacker.

In theaters Friday, “We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks” explores how WikiLeaks, at its height, facilitated the publication of thousands of classified U.S. government documents, including diplomatic cables and U.S. Army logs from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

To tell the story of WikiLeaks, Gibney sought to interview Assange but found the elusive Australian difficult to persuade, eventually deciding to film without him.

But the filmmaker spoke to Assange several times off camera, and said he came to form a picture of a complex character.

“If you catch him in unguarded moments, he can be terribly charming, self-deprecating and a really engaging human being,” Gibney told Reuters.

However, whenever Assange felt the conversation was becoming an official interview, Gibney said he became unwilling to “give me the kind of honest reflections that would have been so important (to the film),” likening him to a “human soap box.”

When Gibney decided to film the documentary without Assange’s participation, he said the WikiLeaks founder did not take the news well.

“He likens himself as the puppet master, the one who’s pulling the strings on the media. I think he took some offense at the idea that I was independent,” Gibney said, adding that Assange had, at one point, asked to be paid for participating.

“He mentioned that the market rate for an interview with him was a million dollars. I didn’t inquire what market that was,” Gibney said with a laugh.

Gibney said Assange had asked him to report what other interview subjects in the documentary were saying about him, something he found to be “highly ironic.”

“(WikiLeaks) was supposed to be a transparency organization, and he was asking me to engage with him as if we’re now some kind of espionage outfit,” he said.

‘DAVID AND GOLIATH STORY’

Gibney, 59, has become a prolific documentarian over the past decade, garnering critical praise for his timely films such as 2005′s “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room” and 2007′s Oscar-winning “Taxi to the Dark Side.”

The filmmaker was drawn to WikiLeaks initially with the idea of it being a “David and Goliath story, with Julian Assange being David,” but over the course of filming for two years, Gibney found the story of WikiLeaks to be as complex as its founder.

The timing of the film’s release couldn’t be more poignant, with U.S. Army private, Bradley Manning, 25, who is accused of leaking classified data to the WikiLeaks website, due to stand trial on June 3. He could face life imprisonment.

Unable to interview Manning for the documentary, Gibney turned to sources that included friends and former colleagues of Manning, and hacker Adrian Lamo, who gave the FBI online chatroom logs where Manning had confided that he had passed classified government information to WikiLeaks.

Gibney said he believed that while Assange had become a celebrity with WikiLeaks, Manning had become a “scapegoat.”

“There’s no doubt that (Manning) has been improperly scapegoated…he’s pled guilty to leaking. But these larger charges, these more serious charges that the government is trying to hang him with, aiding the enemy, carries a possible death sentence. To me, that’s outrageous,” Gibney said.

Gibney also turned to Australian filmmaker Mark Davis for footage of Assange before he became a headline; Davis had been following the WikiLeaks founder before the Afghanistan war-log leaks, which propelled Assange and his website into the news.

Davis’ footage captured a more candid Assange, and Gibney also found home movies from Iceland that showed the WikiLeaks found far less guarded, including a clip of him dancing.

During filming, Assange’s own story developed alongside that of WikiLeaks, culminating in him hiding out at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he has been accused by two women of rape and sexual assault.

Gibney was able to get one of the accusers, former WikiLeaks volunteer Anna, to participate in the documentary.

“(Assange) is the expert at holding others to account….but he’s never wanted anybody to hold him to account. He can’t stand anybody telling him he’s wrong, and so he is refusing to be held to account for these sex allegations in Sweden,” Gibney said.

“I think his downfall was hubris,” said Gibney. “He became reckless. He began to imagine that the transparency agenda and Julian Assange were one and the same. And that’s a very dangerous place to go.”

Although Assange has not seen the film, the WikiLeaks founder and his supporters, including journalist John Pilger and filmmaker Oliver Stone, “denounced” the documentary after it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Gibney said.

“The response around criticism of Julian has been a peculiar kind of tribalism,” said Gibney. “As if somehow Julian should be above criticism or beyond the law. And I find that, in itself, troubling.”

One Direction was named most popular music group, most popular UK musicians, most popular in the UK, and most popular in west Europe, at the Social Star Awards, but did not show up to collect their prizes, sending their thanks by videolink.

Canadian pop star Justin Bieber won the award for best solo artist, Selena Gomez for most popular actor, Ellen DeGeneres for top TV show, and Portuguese soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo for most popular sports star.

The awards highlight viral sensations and people who garner the most social media attention globally based on data from Singapore-based Starcount that tracks the social media activity of 1.7 billion people across 11 social media networks.

American actress Jessica Alba and “Entourage” star Jeremy Piven hosted Thursday night’s ceremony that ended a 24-hour marathon of 288 online awards awarded in categories ranging from best finance brand to top Indonesia actor.

“It is all about the most popular people on the planet … Everyday we are sharing, liking, viewing, tweeting and what our awards show does is celebrate the superstars of social media,” Starcount CEO Paul Morrison told reporters ahead of the awards.

Many of the award winners were absent from the prize giving but the void was filled with live performances by South Korean rapper Psy, American singer Carly Rae Jepsen, SkyBlu from electronic dance duo LMFAO, and U.S. rockers Aerosmith.

RB singer-songwriter Eric Benet hailed the impact of social media.

“If you plan on being relevant and have a sustainable career in this day and age social media is about as important as TV was … in the 1950s,” he told Reuters television.

“Way back in the ’90s when I started back in the music industry we would have to rely on our PR department and our record label but now in this day and age we, the artist, can take command of our career. It’s awesome.”

CANNES (Reuters) – Actors and directors gathered for the world’s leading movie showcase in Cannes this week said television was increasingly luring top talent and should no longer be seen as artistically inferior to the big screen.

TV series like “The Wire,” “Homeland”, “Mad Men,” “The Sopranos” and “Game of Thrones”, which have won critical and commercial success, were cited for breaking down the division between movies and TV, giving audiences innovative viewing.

At the 66th Cannes film festival, moviemakers said a new era of TV was presenting opportunities to take more creative risks.

Director Steven Soderbergh, known for Hollywood hits like “Ocean’s Eleven” has announced plans to retire from filmmaking but expressed interest in working in television.

Soderbergh, 50, whose biopic on pianist Liberace, “Behind the Candelabra”, is in the main competition at Cannes, said there had been a gradual migration of audiences towards television.

“There is a lot of great television being made in the States right now and I feel in terms of cultural real estate that TV is really taking control of the conversation that used to be the exclusive domain of movies,” Soderbergh told reporters.

“I think it is the second golden age of television,” said the director who was reported to have joined forces with actor Clive Owen for a TV drama called “The Knick” set in New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital.

“Behind the Candelabra”, with Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his gay lover, was made for TV, funded by Time Warner’s HBO cable network after Hollywood studios rejected the gay storyline of the $25 million film as too risky.

MORE DEPTH IN TELEVISION

Directors have lamented the fact that the high cost of making and marketing a film is a deterrent to fund any project not deemed a safe bet, driving Hollywood studios towards action and spectacle rather than drama to win sales at the box office.

A second HBO project, a documentary called “Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight”, about the boxer’s court battle after he refused to go to the Vietnam War, is also on show at the 12-day Cannes festival on the French Riviera that ends on Sunday.

British director Stephen Frears said HBO’s presence in the Cannes line-up showed a changed attitude towards television which he welcomed after spending most of his early career in television with Britain’s state broadcaster, the BBC.

“I don’t have the usual snobbish attitude towards television,” Frears, who earned high acclaim for his 2006 film “The Queen”, told Reuters.

“I just go where the good writing is and if it is TV, fine. Nowadays the best writing is in TV.”

Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, whose ultra-violent thriller “Only God Forgives” has sharply divided critics at Cannes, said he was a TV junkie.

“Television has become where people seek creativity in terms of challenge now,” he said, adding that he was working on a TV version of the 1960s sci-fi film “Barbarella”.

Winding Refn also highlighted the changes brought by online providers such as Netflix which this year released all 13 episodes of the big-budget “House of Cards” with Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright to its subscribers.

British actress Kristin Scott Thomas, who plays the evil mother in Refn’s film, said television was a great medium for actors because it gave them a far larger audience.

“It is very satisfying when millions of people watch something you have made,” she said.

CANNES (Reuters) – A man pretending to be South Korean rapper Psy talked his way into glitzy parties at the Cannes film festival and posed with fans until he was spotted drinking champagne by the real Psy’s manager.

Psy, in Singapore on Thursday night to perform at the inaugural Social Star awards, said that Scooter Braun spotted the imposter, took a photo and sent it to the musician.

“He sent it to me, and I tweeted that, like, five, six hours ago, so everybody in France, they know,” Psy told Reuters television at the Singapore ceremony. “Real Psy is here.”

During his run as Psy, the imposter posed for photos with fans and other stars including actress Naomie Harris, from the James Bond movie “Skyfall”, who posted the picture on Twitter.

“It looks as if we’ve been fooled, that wasn’t the real @psy_oppa! Could anyone else tell from the picture? Or am I just going crazy!? Haha!” Harris tweeted.

Psy became a global sensation last year when the video for his song “Gangnam Style”, featuring a horse-riding dance, went viral. It became the first video to receive more than a billion hits on video website YouTube.
