Working from home doesn’t always require a pay cut. In fact, remote workers often earn more than they did in their previous 9-5 office jobs.
“It’s a common misconception that work-from-home jobs are scams, only exist in specific industries like customer service or data entry, and are lower-paying, but that couldn’t be further from the truth,” Sara Sutton, CEO and founder of FlexJobs, said in a statement. “In fact, the average telecommuter earns a higher median salary than an in-office worker. As more companies adopt remote work policies, there are growing opportunities for meaningful and high-paying careers across industries to be built while working from home.”
“With today’s tight labor market, highly qualified professionals are in a prime position to land a high-paying job that includes highly coveted remote work options,” Sutton added.
Workers are increasingly taking the leap to work from home, either on their own or with a remote company. Between 2014 and 2018, the number of professionals who quit their day jobs doubled to 34%, according to a FlexJobs survey.
As it turns out, salary is a top priority for individuals looking for work—but only after work-life balance, according to the FlexJobs survey. And flexible work options follow closely behind. When evaluating a job prospect, respondent listed these factors in order of importance:
- Work-life balance (73%)
- Salary (70%)
- Flexible work options (68%)
- Work schedule (66%)
- Meaningful work (55%)
- Location (53%)
- Company reputation (42%)
- Health insurance (39%)
- Company culture (38%)
- 401(k)/retirement benefits (32%)
- Professional challenge (32%)
- Vacation time (31%)
- Career progression (31%
- Skills training and education options (28%)
- Amount of travel required (27%)
- Special company perks (26%)
- Paid maternity/paternity leave (7%)
- Other (4%)
