The United States on Monday imposed sweeping sanctions on Venezuelan state-owned oil firm PDVSA, the toughest US financial measure so far against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

The move is aimed at pressure on Maduro to cede power to the opposition in the South American country.
