Push city elections to November
Re: “Dallas’ next mayor must be able to dream big and unite,” by Gromer Jeffers Jr., Feb. 25 Metro column.
Jeffers’ list of what the next Dallas mayor should try to accomplish is comprehensive and ambitious. However, I wish Jeffers had further elaborated about the city’s low voter participation, rather than just attribute this problem to voter “disconnect with local government.”
In the waning days of his tenure, Mayor Mike Rawlings has pushed (unsuccessfully) for November city elections. Indeed, if Dallas (and other municipalities, including my own) were to follow Austin’s lead in this, perhaps it, too, would quadruple voter turnout, just as our capital city did when they made this switch in 2014.
