The Oregon Governor’s State Workforce Investment Board has voted to approve the maritime sector as a statewide strategy for developing education and workforce training programs, according to Lincoln County Commissioner Doug Hunt, Chair of the Maritime Workforce Task Force.

In a release, Hunt said the initial report developed by the task force detailed many aspects of the maritime sector that are insufficient such as education and job training programs. The current education infrastructure was identified as inadequate to serve employer and industry needs and unable to keep up with the aging workforce.

The determination was that support and investment are needed to:

Recruit and train future workforce for these skilled living wage jobs Meet the needs of maritime employers Support other sectors which rely upon maritime
