The Sacramento Kings plan to fire coach Dave Joerger on Thursday, a person familiar with the decision confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. The person requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly until the decision was announced by the team.

Joerger and general manager Vlade Divac, who just agreed to a contract extension, had a meeting scheduled for Thursday morning. Joerger has one year left on his contract with the Kings.

Divac also fired assistant general manager Brandon Williams.

On the surface, Joerger’s dismissal is a head-scratcher. Joerger led the Kings to a 39-43 record, the franchise’s best mark since 2005-06 and a 12-game improvement over last season.

Joerger deserves credit for installing a fast-paced style featuring young talent such as De’Aaron Fox, Marvin Bagley III, Buddy Hield, Harry Giles
