GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) — For the past two decades, the number of young people working or looking for work has been declining steadily.

Competition with college students, who need and apply for a lot of the same jobs, is making it tricky for teens to break into the workforce.

Grand Junction Parks and Rec regularly hires teen lifeguards, but other seasonal positions, like summer camp jobs- are increasingly going to off duty teachers, and folks in their 20s.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most teenagers that find work land a position in the leisure and hospitality industry over the summer.
