My son, David, and I took the “old back way” to the Smokies, through Cosby, to avoid heavy traffic. We parked at the overflow parking by the road, as there were maybe as many as 1,000 hiking up to Laurel Falls this day.

So wonderful to see that many people out in nature. We were greeted by all manner of human form along the trail to and from the falls. We found that virtually everyone turns back at the falls. But we ventured on to the top of Cove Mountain, far above Gatlinburg. We saw maybe 10 people the entire rest of the way — five miles round trip from the falls —
