SOUTH HADLEY – The Selectboard has endorsed “The Promise Act,” a revamping of the Chapter 70 state education funding formula.

Senate Bill 238, co-sponsored by state Sen. Jo Comerford, includes reformulating spending for Special Education, out-of-district transportation and low-income students.

Board Vice Chair Andera Miles said Chapter 70 contains provisions to reexamine funding formulas. However, the reviews had not occurred over the years, according to Miles.

The bill calls for a commission to reexamine the spending formula every five years. “The idea behind this bill is to get a more equitable distribution of state funds to school across the state,” Miles said.
