Stephen Sondheim classic runs through June 1 at Asolo Repertory Theatre

From the opening squeal of a high-pitched whistle, the Asolo Repertory Theatre takes audiences on a constantly moving roller coaster ride of vengeance, anger, romance and surprise in a thrilling production of “Sweeney Todd.”

Director and choreographer Peter Rothstein, artistic director of Theatre Latte Da in Minneapolis, uses an approach similar to the one he used last season with his equally exciting, reduced-cast “Ragtime.” Though there are only 10 actors on stage and six musicians in the pit, it sounds like there are far more performing the lush and comically twisted songs by Stephen Sondheim, set to a book by Hugh Wheeler.
