Investors hope for good news from U.S. jobs report

Investors were hoping for a solid showing for U.S. jobs for a second straight month Friday, ahead of the release of the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ report for April. Economists had estimated 190,000 jobs were added last month, according to a Bloomberg survey. Several incidents were expected to affect April employment however: Goldman Sachs estimated that Midwest snowstorms were likely to reduce job gains by about 20,000. Meanwhile, some research firms estimated that early federal government hiring for the 2020 census would increase employment by 10,000-20,000. Those jobs, however, are temporary.
