Erica Maxwell, Associate Superintendent of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

The Arizona Department of Education has created and filled the first-ever executive position focused on equity, diversity and inclusion.

“We do have a lot of inequities in our education system in Arizona, whether that be from school to school or even within schools we’re seeing that different groups of students are achieving at different levels,” said Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman.

Erica Maxwell was chosen from a pool of about 100 applicants. Hoffman said the interview panel included community members.

Maxwell’s more than 25-year education career includes working in a Gila River Indian Community charter school and as an administrator in the Chandler Unified School District, according to a press release from the Department of
