It’s a fitting metaphor for the way the Chicago Cubs’ season has gone down the stretch: star third baseman Kris Bryant being helped off the field while grimacing in pain.

The 2016 National League MVP left Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals in the bottom of the third inning with a sprained ankle, the team announced after the 3-2 loss. Preliminary x-rays were negative for any fractures.

The field was wet because of a light rain at Wrigley Field, and Bryant’s foot slipped off the bag as he was lunging to beat out a double play ground ball.
