A Tennessee state senator who said with a raised voice that higher education should be cut off because it is a “liberal breeding ground” said Monday that he was kidding when he made the remark. 

Sen. Kerry Roberts, a Republican representing Springfield, Tennessee, made the statement on his morning radio talk show on WDBL-AM Sept. 2.

“My listeners clearly understood the humor and hyperbole of it,” he said in a Facebook post published Monday evening.

The radio broadcast, published on Facebook, shows Roberts making the comments with a raised voice. 

Toward the end of his broadcast, as he recalled an activist in favor of protecting abortion rights “going off on some diatribe of social justice,” he said.
