Syracuse, N.Y. — The unemployment rate in the Syracuse area rose to 3.9% in September despite a healthy increase in jobs.
September’s rate was slightly higher than the state jobless rate of 3.7% and the national jobless rate of 3.3% last month. The local rate was 4.2% in August.
New York’s rate was slightly up from 3.6% in September 2018 and down from 4.2% in August. The nation’s rate was below the 3.6% rate in September last year and 3.8% in August of this year.
The increase in the Syracuse area’s unemployment rate occurred even though the area had 8,800 more jobs — including an increase of 8,400 in the private sector — in the three counties that make up the Syracuse area (Madison, Onondaga
