MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – For months now, the Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education has been considering a nickname change.

In October, a committee was formed to weigh the pros and cons of changing the Redmen/Redettes nickname.

Critics say the Redmen/Redettes nickname should be changed because of offensive connotations, while supporters say the name is not racist, and is tradition.

That name change was the topic of public comment at a regular board meeting on Monday night.

Community members say the topic is “divisive” and “difficult,” but still turned out in troves to the Board of Education meeting to give their input.
