An Alpena County educator is taking home an award from the state lottery.

It’s part of the Michigan Lottery’s Excellence in Education awards, which started in 2014.

Bob Thomson teaches seventh and eighth grade STEM subjects at Thunder Bay Junior High School.

Thomson is known for using hands-on projects, many involving the environment and technology.

Thomson gets a plaque, $1,500 and a $500 grant to their classroom, school or district.

He will also be entered to be selected as educator of the year, which has a $10,000 cash prize.
