Unlike its neighbor to the west, Cathedral City is not interested in staying with Desert Community Energy, a public electricity provider that aims to offer greener electricity at competitive prices.

The City Council voted 4-1 on Wednesday night to withdraw from the program and its joint powers authority. The effective date of the withdrawal is July 1, 2021.

Mayor John Aguilar cast the sole “no” vote. 

The withdrawal comes more than a month after council held a study session on the topic, with the majority of its members saying they did not want to move forward.
