A total of 262 people in Walker County filed for initial unemployment claims for the week ending May 9, according to the Alabama Department of Labor on Thursday, showing a continued slowing down in job losses from the virus. 

That is down from 283 initial claims on the week ending May 2 and 887 claims on the week ending April 25. A total of 918 claims were posted on the week ending April 11, 1,349 on the week ending April 4 and 1,099 on the week ending March 28. The number was 158 on the week ending March 21, rising from 23 the week before. 

However, a total of 4,956 have lost jobs in Walker County since the start of the pandemic
