A Rutland police detective hospitalized early this month with COVID-19 has died from the disease.

John Songy, 48, died just after midnight on Friday, his wife, Joanne Songy, wrote in a Facebook post.

“It is with a broken heart that I had to say good bye to my best friend and love of my life,” she said in the post, published at 11:21 a.m. Friday. “I would like to thank each and everyone of you from the bottom of my heart for the prayers, love, and support that you have given to me and our family.”
