What’s Worth Streaming: Here’s everything new to Hulu in September 2022 — and what’s leaving

by | Aug 23, 2022 | Stock Market

September is an eventful month for Hulu, which will roll out new seasons of some of its most acclaimed series, but also lose next-day streaming for NBCUniversal shows. Here’s the short and sweet explanation: Disney
DIS,
-3.50%
-controlled Hulu and minority partner Comcast
CMCSA,
-2.74%
(which owns NBCUniversal, including NBC, Bravo, USA, Syfy and streaming service Peacock) ended their next-day streaming deal, effective in September, as part of a gradual unwinding that will eventually see most (if not all) NBCU programming migrating to Peacock.

What does this mean for viewers? Fewer options on Hulu, mostly. While older seasons of many NBCU series will remain on Hulu, at least for a while, next-day streaming of NBCU shows like “Saturday Night Live” will stop, and will stream exclusively on Peacock. But some shows are leaving right away — such as all seasons of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Top Chef” and the “Real Housewives” franchises (all leaving Sept. 18). On the bright side, Hulu is adding some hits in September. “The Handmaid’s Tale” (Sept. 14) returns for its fifth season. The grim, dystopian drama has never been quite as timely, coming after the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The new season finds June (Elisabeth Moss) still fighting Gilead after escaping to Canada, while grieving widow Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) finds a new fan in a certain Mrs. Wheeler (Genevieve Angelson), a villain who poses a major new threat.
