N.J. teacher wins $10K national education award after year full of honors – NJ.com

It’s been quite a year for East Orange social studies teacher Theresa Maughan.Last year, she was named New Jersey’s 2021-2022 State Teacher of the Year.Now, she is receiving one of teaching’s highest national honors.Maughan, who teaches high school social studies at East Orange STEM Academy, and will be one of five educators from across the country receiving the 2023 Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence from the NEA Foundation, a non-profit group based in Washington, D.C.Each honoree will receive a $10,000 award and be featured in a documentary.“[The Horace Mann Award] means a lot because it focuses on things that are important to me within my classroom, ensuring equity and inclusion for my students and finding ways to connect what we learn in our community,” said Maughan.The award, which is sponsored by the Horace Mann Educators Foundation, recognizes public school educators across the country for their leadership inside and out of the classroom.An expert panel selects the honorees each year from nominations made by each state’s education association. The panel picks the winners based on “their exceptional skill in the classroom, attention to equity and diversity, engagement of families and communities, commitment to ongoing professional development, and advocacy for the profession,” according to the foundation.The 2023 Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence will be added to Maughan’s list of professional accomplishments at the NEA Foundation Salute to Excellence in Education Gala on May 5, where she and her fellow awardees will be recognized.Of Maughan’s over four decades of being in front of the classroom, 35 years have been spent in the East Orange School District, where district officials have called her a “remarkable educator.”As New Jersey’s 2021-22 Teacher of the Year, Maughan had a six-month sabbatical working alongside officials from the state Department of Education to promote educational initiatives and meet with teachers across the state.She was a guest at the White House, joining Pre …
