The holiday dates back to 1919, when President Woodrow Wilson, referring to it then as Armistice Day, said it “will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service.” The original concept, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, was “for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 a.m.”
