Leon Halip/Getty ImagesDespite receiving interest as an offensive coordinator, Jim Caldwell is only seeking head coaching jobs this offseason.Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport, Caldwell turned down the Washington Commanders’ request to interview him for their vacant offensive coordinator position because he wants to be a head coach.Caldwell has already met with the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers about their coaching vacancies.Commanders head coach Ron Rivera announced on Monday the firing of Scott Turner after three seasons as offensive coordinator.”Unfortunately, we did not live up to the expectations and standard that I expected to see from our offensive unit,” Rivera said in a statement. “I felt it was best for a fresh start at the coordinator position going into next year. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Scott and thanked him for his three years of service to our organization.”Caldwell hasn’t worked in the NFL since the 2019 season when he was a consultant for the Miami Dolphins. He was originally hired as an assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach for Brian Flores’ staff, but took a leave of absence due to health concerns before the start of the season.The Dolphins didn’t bring Caldwell back in 2020, though NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reported the 67-year-old was ready to return to coaching.Caldwell interviewed with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Chicago Bears for their head-coaching positions last offseason.Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported at the time that Caldwell was among the favorites for the Bears job. Matt Eberflus was ultimately hired by Chicago.Caldwell succeeded Tony Dungy as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts in 2009. He went 26-22 with two playoff appearances and an AFC championship in three seasons.After spending three seasons as an assistant with the Baltimore Ravens, Caldwell was hired as head coach for the Detroit Lions prior to the 2014 season.
