It’s hard to wrap one’s head around the devastating toll of the twin earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria last week, which have claimed more than 33,000 lives. But there is some small comfort in the outpouring of international support as aid rushes into the area — including this anecdote of an anonymous man who walked into the Turkish embassy in the U.S., and then donated $30 million for the earthquake victims.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tweeted on Saturday that he was “deeply moved” by this donation. The Turkish embassy wasn’t immediately available for comment to elaborate on the gift. But CNN reported that Anadolu Agency, one of Turkey’s state-run media channels, confirmed the news. Sharif tweeted that “an anonymous Pakistani” walked into the embassy to make this generous gift. “These are such glorious acts of philanthropy that enable humanity to triumph over the seemingly insurmountable odds,” Sharif added in the tweet.

His tweet was retweeted almost 2,000 times by the middle of Sunday afternoon, and had been “liked” more than 14,000 times. And Turkey native Hamdi Ulukaya, the CEO and founder of Chobani yogurt, has pledged to donate $1 million to the Turkish Philanthropy Funds, and said that he will match up to $1 million in additional donations to help people affected by the disaster.
