MarketWatch Metrics: India is overtaking China today as the world’s most populous country – according to this projection

India is overtaking China today as the most populated country in the world, according to a MarketWatch projection of data released by the United Nations, which suggests India’s population will hit 1,425,782,975  today, while China’s will fall to 1,425,748,032. China had been the world’s most populous country since at least 1950, when the UN started releasing population data. 

Today’s projection is based on data that was released in July 2022 in the United Nations’ World Population Prospects and a simple linear equation. The July 2022 report said only that India is projected to surpass China as the world’s most populous country “sometime in 2023.” So why is today – arguably – the day?  The UN collected data on the population of more than 200 countries and areas with at least 1,000 people in the previous year. The data are collected from a variety of sources, depending on how a country assesses its own population. The UN’s population projections are then made for January 1 and July 1 of each year. As a result, the UN has projected that India’s population on January 1, 2023 was 1,422,026,528 and will be 1,428,627,663 on July 1, 2023, an increase of over 6.6 million people.
