The hospitality industry is currently witnessing an upward trend that aligns with broader tourism metrics. Recent Eurostat data reveals that tourist accommodation across the European Union saw overnight stays surge to 2,920 million last year, marking a growth of 6.3%. This growth spurt, however, brings with it a spectrum of challenges, particularly in sustainability and digitalization. These critical issues will be front and center at the forthcoming TIS – Tourism Innovation Summit 2024, slated for October 23-25 in Seville, Spain.
For yet another year, the Tourism Innovation Global Summit will host the Hospitality Tech Forum, which will bring together hotel leaders to share strategies and success stories that address current challenges. In the words of Ángeles Moreno, congress curator of the TIS – Tourism Innovation Summit, “we have designed a very complete program of contents focused on the main challenges and opportunities of the hotel sector, and in which topics such as Chinese luxury tourism, hotel innovation, and tourism massification stand out. TIS2024 will also address advances in big data, artificial intelligence, and circular economy, as well as investments and agreements between hotel owners and operators. The program seeks to inspire tourism leaders with innovative approaches and cutting-edge solutions”.
At the heart of these challenges is the imperative of sustainability. Industry leaders like Elena Martín of Ilunion Hotels, Sascha Gil from United Waterways, Miguel Figueroa of the TUI Care Foundation, and Rolando García of Eurecat, will dissect how tourism enterprises can adopt sustainable and circular economy approaches to drastically cut waste and enhance resource efficiency while fostering environmental stewardship.
Amidst this sustainability drive, innovative business models are taking shape. Figures such as Sara Matarrubia from Meliá Hotels International, Dafna Martin of Adyen, and Juan Manuel Zapata from The Social Hub will delve into sustainable tourism trends. Their discussions will revolve around pioneering the design and development of eco-friendly lodging options, including tree houses and glamping setups.
Technological innovations also play a pivotal role in meeting sustainability goals. To this end, Lucía Martínez, CIO of AR Hotels, Edoardo Colombo, president of Turismi.ai, and Feliks Kasimi from Cientouno Group, will explore how leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Big Data can enhance sustainable decision-making in the hotel industry.
